My Approach

Beginning psychotherapy can be daunting. At some level we are aware that it means facing ourselves and intentionally seeing those things that we spend most of our time avoiding. Psychotherapy, at its best, provides a supportive and safe relationship within which to do so. However, we all know change can be hard. I’m here to help.

The question of how or why therapy works has puzzled us for more than a century.   Around the late 80's and early 90's, psychologists began working on research to see what might work - and the emphasis on providing "evidence based practices" began.  There are now many kinds of therapies that are considered evidence based, but most importantly we have learned that the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client is one of the most significant factors in creating any kind of successful outcome.  As a result, the development of a warm and safe relationship is key to my work.

In addition to this, I tend to work flexibly between a handful of different theoretical orientations and interventions, depending on the needs of the client.  Some of these include: ACT (Acceptance and Commitment therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

“In ACT, our main interest in a thought is not whether it’s true or false, but whether it’s helpful; that is, if we pay attention to this thought, will it help us create the life we want?”
